Foxconn sees net profits reach NT$27.39 billion in 1H11
Published: Thursday, September 1, 2011 | By: DennisDigitimes is reporting that Foxconn had some pretty good profits this year. It is too bad they likely didn't come from the channel products

Foxconn Electronics (Hon Hai Precision Industry) has announced net profits of NT$27.38 billion (US$945.93 million) for the first half with EPS down 20% on year to NT$2.58.
For the third quarter, Foxconn is expected to ship 20 million units of iPad 2 to Apple, a growth of 60% sequentially, and the orders should be the major growth driver for the company in the second half. However, Foxconn has declined to comment on a specific client. -
ASUS Maximus IV Extreme-Z Review @ ocaholic
Published: Thursday, September 1, 2011 | By: DennisWe recently reviewed the P67 edition of the Maximus IV Extreme and found it to be an excellent motherboard with plenty of flexibility. The Z68 is basically the same board but supports the new disk cache feature.
The Maximus IV Extreme-Z is ASUS' latest flagship regarding their socket 1155 line-up. With its ROG brand the taiwanese mainboard giant targets gamers as well as overclockers. Very impressive is for example the number of USB 3.0 ports this board comes with. There is a total of eight of these ports.
Picking either one of these boards will get you the same basic performance regardless of what processor and video cards you choose to run.

The next Duke Nukem Game to be revealed ‘Soon’
Published: Wednesday, August 31, 2011 | By: DennisRumors of another Duke game?
It would seem that Gearbox is looking to make that happen. Chances are it will be better than the last one they released, that is assuming they can design a game that allows you to do what made duke famous in the "3D" days.
This being the Duke part of the panel, Pitchford even managed to make a boob joke. Here's the speech, picking up with a discussion of the review scores for Duke Nukem Forever. Pitchford was speaking in front of about 900 Gearbox fans, few of whom clapped when he asked if the press who slammed the game were "full of shit":
Wow!?! really? That last quote seems like a total dick move but they say if you can control the crowd you can do anything.
Here is the part about the next Duke game.
"And then soon… I know that you guys figured out that, when Gearbox acquired the franchise, we didn't do it just to make sure we could all play Duke Forever, but because we wanted to make our own Duke game. Soon, we'll talk about that, but not today. [the crowd cheers]"
WIth any luck we will see it in the next couple years, of course pending any game engine upgrades.

Let's say you were given a year to kill Hewlett-Packard. Here's how you do it:
Published: Wednesday, August 31, 2011 | By: DennisIf the title doesn't spark to you check out this article check out the quote.
From former CEO Carly Fiorina's spectacular flame-out, and former chairwoman Patricia Dunn's illegal spying scandal, to Mr. Hurd's alleged sex scandal that apparently didn't involve any sex at all, this sort of dysfunction has become "the H-P Way."
It has been a year since H-P fired Mr. Hurd. Jack Kevorkian couldn't have devised a better plan for euthanizing a company. But like the good doctor used to say: "Dying is not a crime."The article basically speculates how bad business decisions can lead to the downfall of even the largest of companies.

Battle of the SATA 3.0 Controllers @ Techgage
Published: Monday, August 29, 2011 | By: DennisWe all know that performance in a PC is based on hardware and slightly on how good the drivers are. Well our friends at Techgage did a little test to see who has the best 6GB/s SATA controller, Intel, AMD or Marvell.
With newer SSDs now coming well within 10% of maxing out a SATA 3.0 port, it's important to make sure that your motherboard is properly equipped to handle such drives if planning to buy one. In our testing, while AMD's and Intel's solutions offered superb performance, Marvell's leaved a bit (or a lot) to be desired.
The results may suprise you.

Sapphire Pure Platinum A75 & AMD A8-3800 @ LanOC Reviews
Published: Monday, August 29, 2011 | By: DennisHot new Llano motherboards from Sapphire, styling hasn't changed much from the P67 we reviewed but they did update the layout added a mini PCI Express slot.
It has only been a few weeks since AMD introduced their Llano APU and things are finally starting to come together. Today Sapphire is joining the mix with an addition from their Pure line, the Pure Platinum A75. Sapphire has had a big push to become a name to be reckoned with in the motherboard market and their Pure line has thus far done a good job. Paired up with an AMD A8-3800, today we will be taking a look at both Sapphires new board and the A-Series platform as a whole.
Lets hope they keep it up.

When it rains it pours - a response to the unexpected
Published: Friday, August 26, 2011 | By: DennisThis is not so much intended as a response to hurricane Irene but rather to express how even the best laid plans and schedules can be totally blown out of the water when something "unexpected" happens.
In my case, that would be client work. You see, in addition to running the day to day on Ninjalane.com I support several clients from basic website maintenance and development to a few select computers, servers, and networks. Under the normal run of things my client work is extremely light but, every once in awhile the world comes crashing down on them and I'm called to action.
What I never expect is when ALL of them contact me in the same week. Without going into too many details I had a server crash, broken laptop panel, malware infection (thrice on the same PC) and website updates across two sites. Those things combined really threw off my posting schedule and really ate into my designated time to decompress.
Of course this is simply a long version of the "phj34r my lack of n3ws" postings that I normally publish during times like this but, I felt it was needed.btw, PAX starts today, sadly "we" weren't able to attend but it's on the schedule for next year. The convention isn't friendly for press but that doesn't mean we can't post stuff after the fact and generally enjoy going. In the meantime sit tight there is a motherboard and two chassis reviews in the works, all of which are almost ready to post.

Serious Sam 3: BFE gets a release date
Published: Thursday, August 25, 2011 | By: DennisOh no, not a prequel !!
Slated for October 18, BFE will serve as a prequel to 2001's Serious Sam: The First Encounter. Set in 22nd century Egypt, the latest entry vows to deliver a modernized Serious Sam experience without altering the formula that earned its predecessors a cult following: relentless action and a wanton disregard for digital life forms. That's all you can really demand in an arcade-style first-person shooter.
I'm gonna buy it, how about you? Be sure to check out the gameplay video, its just like the first 2 Serious Sam games but with better graphics.

SilverStone DC01: An Entry Into The Linux NAS Market @ Phoronix
Published: Wednesday, August 24, 2011 | By: DennisIf you need to access files from more than one location you have a couple of options. You can buy/build a network server to host those files and deal with all of the headaches associated with it or buy a small NAS box, plug it in and forget about it.
When talking about SilverStone Technology on Phoronix it's commonly about one of their wonderfully-designed computer cases that we have enjoyed reviewing over the past six years, one of their power supplies, or the few other product categories this Taiwanese manufacturer has explored. Among the more peculiar products from SilverStone has been the HDDBOOST, the Raven mouse, and the Treasure RFID Enclosure. What we have our hands on today is SilverStone's first entry into the single-drive Network Attached Storage (NAS) market. The SilverStone DC01 is an affordable Linux-based NAS server.
Most NAS boxes run Linux but so far this is the first one from Silverstone and is worth checking out.
