GTA 6 reportedly requires a massive 210GB download size on PlayStation 5

The upcoming launch of Grand Theft Auto 6 is shaping up to be as much a test of console storage as it is a gaming milestone. Recent reports indicate that the title will require a massive 210 GB download on PlayStation 5 consoles, a figure that would make it one of the largest installations of the current console generation.

This reported file size comes via the PlayStation Game Size X account, which tracks backend data from the PlayStation Store, and has been independently noted by other industry sources. While Rockstar Games has not officially confirmed the final storage requirements, the 210 GB figure specifically applies to the Standard Edition on PS5. While a specific size for the Xbox Series X|S versions has not been revealed, expectations are that the footprint will remain in the 200 GB range.

The sheer scale of the installation is likely a byproduct of the game's ambition. Rockstar has stated that the title features the richest and densest open world ever created in a video game, with the city of Vice City reportedly being twice the size of Los Santos from Grand Theft Auto 5. For context, this represents a significant jump over previous Rockstar titles; while Grand Theft Auto 5 is approximately 105 GB on PC, Red Dead Redemption 2 sits at 150 GB.

Launch Logistics and Editions

To mitigate the impact of such a large download, Rockstar will allow players to begin pre-loading the game on November 12, 2026, exactly one week before the official global launch on November 19. This window is particularly critical given the file size, as it allows users with slower internet connections to secure the data before the midnight release. This early access to the files also aligns with the review embargo, which is expected to lift on November 18, just one day prior to launch.

Players can choose between two primary versions of the game:

  • Standard Edition: Priced at $79.99, including the base game and the Vintage Vice City Pack for early pre-orders.
  • Ultimate Edition: Priced at $99.99, adding exclusive vehicles, weapons, clothing, and additional in-game locations.

Interestingly, the physical edition available starting November 12 will not include a traditional game disc, instead providing a download code. This move likely avoids the logistical hurdle of shipping multiple discs to accommodate a 210 GB install. It remains unverified whether the Ultimate Edition will require additional storage beyond the Standard Edition due to its extra content.

Hardware Implications

From a hardware perspective, a 210 GB footprint creates a significant storage challenge for PS5 owners. For those using the original PlayStation 5 model without an SSD expansion, this single game would occupy roughly one-third of the approximately 667 GB of usable storage. This may force a widespread "spring cleaning" of SSDs as players delete other titles to make room for the installation.

There is also the lingering question of whether 210 GB represents the initial download or the final installed size, as the two often differ. Furthermore, while digital pre-orders have already seen massive demand—with some estimates placing digital pre-orders at 6.45 million units as of October 20—the actual impact on drive space will not be fully known until the November 12 pre-load window opens.

As the industry moves toward higher-fidelity assets and more expansive worlds, the storage requirements for Grand Theft Auto 6 set a new benchmark for the generation. This baseline size will likely only grow as the game receives day-one updates or the eventual integration of a new iteration of GTA Online. With a PC version planned for a later date, the impact on desktop storage will likely be a primary point of concern for PC enthusiasts once that port is detailed.
