After careful consideration I have decided to transfer all hardware review activities to a new domain.  I purchased Hardwareasylum.com in 2012 and have been working hard to build a new and improved Ninjalane on that domain.  If you are reading this you have reached one of the archived articles, news, projects and/or reviews that were left behind during the site migration.

Please update your bookmarks and be sure to visit the new and improved Ninjalane at Hardwareasylum.com

    Installation and New Stuff

One nice thing about all of the QNAP NAS units is that they all have very similar feature sets and can all be setup in a similar manner.  The TS-509 Pro is no exception however it does come with a touch-n-go PC-less interface that allows you to setup and administer the unit without needing a PC or the QFinder software.

This interface is nothing more than an LED display and 2 buttons.  If you have ever configured a network printer you will be more than familiar with the new QNAP display.
For this review we loaded the TS-509 Pro up with 4 36gig Raptor drives that we had lying around.  When the system was powered on the OS detected the drives and asked us what we wanted to do.  Since this was a new installation we are presented with a series of screens that walks you thru the basic configuration including network setup and RAID configurations.

We decided to configure a RAID-5 array, and after a quick format the 97GB array was ready to use.
