QuakeCon 2008
Published: Tuesday, August 5, 2008 | By: WillQuakeCon is going on. This is a wonderful time for all of us Ninja Fraggers to set at a table, and eat up the carnage. Still there is more to QuakeCon then the guts and glory of gaming. There is the softer side like awesome modded cases. Let's read this and see what else QuakeCon 2008 has to offer.
"QuakeCon is many things to many people. For the pro gamer it is a place to show your skills; challenging the best of the best and competing against the world's top teams in everything from Guitar Hero to different variations of Quake. Gamers old and new travel to Dallas, Texas every year, trying to compete for their piece of the prize money.
Computer enthusiasts who do not compete on the professional level also attend QuakeCon. Many are there to participate in LAN gaming in what is known as the BYOC, or Bring Your Own Computer. This area features some of the world's top enthusiasts, some flying in from places like Sweden, Germany and even Asia. The computers they bring are often one off, custom enclosures that take up to several months to fabricate."
QuakeCon 2008 FTW!

Intel Letting The Larrabee Out
Published: Monday, August 4, 2008 | By: WillCome one, come all to the greatest show of them all. Intel has just started a whole new grudge match in the hardware arena. Here gives a good read on what to look for out of the new GPU from Intel.
"Intel today takes a portion of the veil off their upcoming Larrabee architecture, so we can better understand its implementation, how it differs from a typical GPU, why it benefits from taking the 'many cores' route, its performance scaling and of course, what else it has in store."
Place your bets right here.

DFI sees increased shipments of casino machines
Published: Monday, August 4, 2008 | By: DennisGo DFI!
Taiwan-based industrial PC maker DFI saw 49% of its total revenues for July 2008 come from casino machine shipments to the US and Europe, much higher than the 17% recorded in July 2007, according to the company.
The increase in shipments was because casino operators have been replacing their gambling machines, DFI pointed out. Shipment volumes in August and September 2008 may be the same, or higher than in July, DFI indicated.
DFI's revenues in July rose 39% on month and 97.6% on year to reach of NT$326 million (US$10.6 million) thanks mainly due to the booming casino machine sales, the company noted. -
Nvidia says it is not quitting the chipset market
Published: Monday, August 4, 2008 | By: DennisSeems nVidia got really upset over the latest Digittimes deboccle. In fact there are 2 retractions posted on their site.
The first is just a title change to the original news post
http://www.digitimes.com/news/a20080801VL203.html
The second post is a retraction. I just love the last sentence.
Nvidia has released an official statement refuting the recent Digitimes story claiming that the company is planning to quit its chipset business. Michael Jong, senior director of corporate marketing for Nvidia indicated that Nvidia has no intention of getting out of the chipset business and that the report is completely groundless.
Jong stated that Nvidia's MCP business is as strong as it ever has been for both AMD and Intel platforms, and pointed out that Mercury Research reported Nvidia's market share on AMD platforms was 60% last quarter. The company added that SLI was still the preferred multi-GPU platform and that the nForce 790i SLI is the recommended choice by editors worldwide.
Nvidia is looking forward to bringing new and very exciting MCP products to the market for both AMD and Intel platforms, Jong stated.
A previous Digitimes report cited sources as saying that Nvidia was planning to exit the PC chipset business.Cool Stuff

Site says Nvidia will exit chipset biz, Nvidia denies
Published: Friday, August 1, 2008 | By: DennisNasty rumor, or elaborate cover-up?
This wouldn't be the first time digitimes has made up rumors just to wake up the sleeping PR giants (or trolls)
Puzzled, we asked Nvidia Platform Products PR chief Bryan Del Rizzo to weigh in. Del Rizzo's response came swiftly and left little open for interpretation:The story on Digitimes is completely groundless. We have no intention of getting out of the chipset business.
In fact, our MCP business is as strong as it ever has been for both AMD and Intel platforms:- Mercury Research has reported that the NVIDIA market share of AMD platforms in Q2 08 was 60%. We have been steady in this range for over two years.
- SLI is still the preferred multi-GPU platform thanks to its stellar scaling, game compatibility and driver stability.
- nForce 790i SLI is the recommended choice by editors worldwide due to its compelling combination of memory performance, overclocking, and support for SLI. . . .
I'd be interested to see what they have in store.

Nvidia to quit chipset business
Published: Friday, August 1, 2008 | By: DennisTalk about Birthday sadness.

Nvidia has decided to throw in the towel and quit the chipset business, sources close to the situation at one of Taiwan's top motherboard makers have revealed. As the story is told, Nvidia called a meeting earlier this week with its motherboard partners to gauge support for it continuing to develop chipsets in the future.
The motherboard makers' response? Silence.
It is still early days and not all the facts are known at the time of writing, but it is believed Nvidia will transfer the chipset team to working on GPU projects. On the motherboard makers' side, some makers have already canceled upcoming high-end motherboard projects based on the nForce 7-series chipset.Funny how when VIA quit the core logic market nobody seemed to care, or I never noticed.
