  • Gainward FX PowerPack! Ultra1800PCX GS @ Overclockers Online

Published: Monday, October 4, 2004 | By: Dennis

Many of the early PCI Express video cards where just the AGP units with a PCIe to AGP bridge to make the connection. Even though this card is using the older 5900XT GPU I still think it is dead sexy to look at.
"The Gainward FX PowerPack! Ultra1800PCX "Golden Sample" is the focus of this review. Based on the GeForce FX 5900 XT GPU and a 256-bit memory bus, the Ultra1800PCX should perform well in today's games. Let's start."

  • Danger Den Water Cooling Kit @ XYZ

Published: Monday, October 4, 2004 | By: Dennis

"Judging from the other two systems, I think the Danger Den kit performed really well. The Swiftech H20-120-P is very powerful and extremely well-designed, but the Danger Den kit was able to compete, though it did have the help of a double-sized radiator and an extra fan. This is most likely the reason why the idle temperatures were lower with the Danger Den kit."
Danger Den does make some really neat watercooling kits though I've found that if you really want some good performance you need to custom build your watercooler to match the intended system and case. (i.e. Dual fan radiators perform great though are way to big for most cases.)

  • DFI LanParty UT 915P-T12 Review @ Phoronix

Published: Monday, October 4, 2004 | By: Dennis

"After tinkering with the BIOS for quite some time and testing the system at different speeds, we finished overclocking when we were at 3.6Ghz stable with our Intel Pentium 4 530 (3.0GHz) while our CPU was at 1.475 volts and memory at 2.9 volts. Cooling the CPU was the Intel stock HSF, with an average load temperature of 38°C."
I have a pretty good feeling that this board using the same processor will do 3.9Ghz stable with default memory voltage.

You'll just have to trust me on this one. wink smile

  • NL: Review Block - 6800 Edition

Published: Thursday, September 30, 2004 | By: Dennis

I think the 6800's would sell better if people could actually buy them in the same channels as other mainstream video cards. If you don't believe me try to find a 6800 Ultra "box" at the local CompUSA or Best Buy (not that I would ever suggest anyone ever shop at Best Buy, there is nothing worse than to be "greeted" as you walk in the door and made to feel bad as you walk out empty handed.).

  • SilverStone SST-TJ05 @ Techware Labs

Published: Thursday, September 30, 2004 | By: Dennis

I got to talk to the Editor guy from Techware Labs on the phone during Computex, while we never actually met it was good to chat with a fellow editor.

    The calls were expensive.....
"Sundial micro has kindly sent us the Silverstone SST-TJ05 case for review. The SST-TJ05 Temjin is quite a sight with its automotive high-gloss finish and extra-deep design for dual-processor motherboards. All of you dual opteron fanatics can rejoice, as this case should be big enough to accommodate those boards."
Silverstone has some pretty sweet designs; maybe they will send a case our way in the near future.

  • SilverStone Lascala LC-02 Pt 1 and 2

Published: Thursday, September 30, 2004 | By: Dennis

It would seem that their previous review needed to be updated to explore the "extended" cooling abilities of the LC-02 case that comes in the form of 2 60mm fans! shock smile
"The third revision of the LC-02 features two optional 60mm fan slots for improved case cooling. The 60mm fans I will be installing are SUNON 60x60x20mm fans rated at 3600RPM producing 18.5CFM at 28dBA, the fan on the left of the case will be intake and the fan on the right: exhaust. Unfortunately, neither SUNON nor SilverStone included case screws. Lucky for me; I have more than enough screws to support ~50 case fans of my choosing."
The link to part one is in the review.

  • Corsair XMS2 - 5400 Review @ OC-Zone

Published: Thursday, September 30, 2004 | By: Dennis

"Esta é a fabrica em Fremont - California onde são montadas e testadas as memórias da CORSAIR. Mas como a CORSAIR sempre foi uma marca inovadora veio mais uma vez surpreender o mercado com as suas novas XMS2, o 2 quer dizer que são as novas DDR2 preparadas para as novas plataformas de Pentium4, não contentes com a norma para DDR2 de 533Mhz a CORSAIR enviou-nos um KIT Dual Channel que apresenta velocidades de 675Mhz!"
Yep what he said. happy smile

On a serious note, the XMS2 Pro memory from Corsair is pretty sweet and has more LEDs than normal people. tongue smile

  • Alphacool NexXxos XP Review @ GruntvillE

Published: Thursday, September 30, 2004 | By: Dennis

"The only drawback to the block is that the barbs that were supplied would not screw all the way into the block, leaving some thread showing. This is a concern only because it makes it imperative that you use Teflon tape, or other sealant, to make sure that the block does not leak. It took me 3 tries to get everything right."
There are plenty of instances where threads will be showing out the top of your high end waterblocks, that’s live time to deal and can be overcome. However when it takes you 3 tries to get a proper seal that is pretty pathetic.

You can decide which party to blame. wink smile

  • 3D Realms buys physics for Duke Nukem Forever

Published: Monday, September 27, 2004 | By: Dennis

Could this mean they are actually planning to finish the game??
" Meqon is glad to announce that 3DRealms have decided to buy our Meqon Game Dynamics SDK for their upcoming title Duke Nukem Forever.

Meqon’s product strategy has always been to create the most easy to use and flexible physics engine on the market, but without compromising the computational speed. George Broussard, CEO of 3DRealms comments – “We evaluated several physics SDK's and Meqon was really fast, had the cleanest interface and integrated into our game very quickly.”"

Too bad they won't be using the Quake II engine. tongue smileapprove smile
