After careful consideration I have decided to transfer all hardware review activities to a new domain.  I purchased Hardwareasylum.com in 2012 and have been working hard to build a new and improved Ninjalane on that domain.  If you are reading this you have reached one of the archived articles, news, projects and/or reviews that were left behind during the site migration.

Please update your bookmarks and be sure to visit the new and improved Ninjalane at Hardwareasylum.com

    Benchmarks - Real World

    Gaming Performance
Serious Sam is a great looking game with really large maps and even with conservative settings will tax even the fastest of computers. I used default settings for this benchmark. (a few frames behind the reference system, hummm..)
My personal favorite, Quake 3. FYI, The four demo comes with the 1.30 point release of Quake 3 and sometimes goes away when you upgrade.
I used a multi-player demo called checkpoint for this benchmark. If you wish to try it yourself the demo file can be downloaded from the following website http://www.3dcenter.de/downloads/rtcw-checkpoint.php
    Content Creation Winstone 2002
The best of the best when it comes to real world benchmarks, this free program is available from eTesting Labs and uses real programs to test the overall performance of your computer. These programs include: Adobe Photoshop 6, Adobe Premiere 6.0, Macromedia Director 8.5, Macromedia Dreamweaver UltraDev 4, Microsoft Windows Media Encoder 7, Netscape Navigator 6.01, and Sonic Foundry Sound Forge 5.0c

It would appear that my switch to WinXP threw my scores off since after 5 runs this is the best score I got. The same goes for the Business Winstone below.
    Business Winstone 2001
Business Winstone is quite similar to the Content Creation benchmark but uses programs that you would most likely use in the office. These programs include Microsoft Office 2000, Microsoft Project 98, Lotus Notes R5, NicoMak WinZip, Norton AntiVirus, and Netscape Communicator.
    SPECviewperf
Here is a realworld benchmark to give us an idea as to how well the system will perform in a "workstation" environment. For more information about this benchmark and what it can and cannot do please refer to this page http://www.specbench.org/gpc/opc.static/viewperf.htm
Reference values in yellow are from the Soltek SL-75DRV5 Review running an Athlon XP 1700+ at default speed on Win2k.
