  • Slackware 8.1

Published: Thursday, June 20, 2002 | By: Dennis

The newest version of Slackware has been released today and is ready for download. If you have the bandwidth and a CD burner I'd suggest getting the ISO. Of course if you don't have the bandwidth for 40bux US you can get the Slackware box set that includes everything on 4 CD's.

" Highlights of this release include KDE 3.0.1, GNOME 1.4.1 (with new additions like Evolution), the long-awaited Mozilla 1.0 browser, support for many new filesystems like ext3, ReiserFS, JFS, and XFS, and support for several new SCSI and ATA RAID controllers. "

It would appear that fast food is causing schoolgirls to become nymphomaniacs, but there is hope from this gynecologist that runs a free sex consultation clinic. Sounds fishy to me but whatever it takes to help the kids.

" A tendency for getting their lips around a Whopper has turned Japanese schoolgirls into Nippon's naughtiest nymphomaniacs, according to Shukan Gendai (6/29)."

  • Soltek P4 Motherboard Overclocked to 800MHz!

Published: Wednesday, June 19, 2002 | By: Dennis

According to the news I just received using an engineering sample Pentium 4 1.7GHz processor the R&D team at Soltek was able to overclock the chipset to from 133MHz to 200MHz for a final FSB of 800MHz. Disclaimer: engineering sample processors are normally unlocked for multiplier adjustments.

It would appear they have come up with a bios version that will lock the PCI and AGP clocks to their respective speeds allowing just the CPU clock to be elevated and is available for the SL-85MIR series boards now.

    "Bulk:

    Retail:

So it looks like we could buy bulk and overclock or spend the extra fiddy and know it works. happy smile

  • Overclocking, It Might Have Caught On

Published: Tuesday, June 18, 2002 | By: Dennis

It would appear that Intel is moving a little slower than motherboard mfgs. would like and has started overclocking the Intel parts in an attempt to speed up their specification process.

"A trend of overclocking the set memory frequency is escalating in the motherboard market. Industry sources said that the situation suggests manufacturers have become more impatient about following Intel’s specifications development step by step."

Once again the wealth of tech news has dwindled some so I figured this is the next best thing. Pulp Phantom is a Starwars Pulp Fiction spoof that is damn funny.

If you have any fun and exciting links feel free to send them in, and if you are starving for tech news the Ninjalane World News Section was updated not to long ago.

  • 10 P4 Heatsinks Under Review @ Tweakers AU

Published: Monday, June 17, 2002 | By: Dennis

Heatsinks galore, though I am very disappointed in that the AVC "Sunflower" didn't appear on their list it would appear that the all copper ThermalTake Dragon “clone”sink is the stand-in. Well if you are in the market check it out.

General heatsink fyi: Copper heatsinks will be very loud, but work quite well. Alu heatsinks won't help with any overclocking venture. The copper core/alu radial configs seem to be the best of both worlds, good cooling with a minimum amount of noise.

  • Lindows Equipped PC

Published: Friday, June 14, 2002 | By: Dennis

Wal-Mart is now selling PC's with Lindows preinstalled instead of the industry standard Windows OS. This is a bold move for the market chain esp. considering the cross section of people that shop at Wal-Mart. Their new slogan should be "We got your Windows refund right here!" (parsed from a Penny Arcade cartoon).

  • GeForce Ti4400 Shootout @ Gamers Depot

Published: Friday, June 14, 2002 | By: Dennis

As far as GeForce 4 cards go the Ti4400 seems to be the best card for your upgrade buck. Granted its the supa fast like the Ti4600 but its not hardware limited like the Ti4200 and is overclockable.

" As a quick recap, the Ti4400 is functionally the exact same chip as the TI4600, the only difference is its slightly lower core clock speed and memory clock speed. "

Also keep in mind that since many of these cards are copies of nVidia's reference design they all perform identically. So, take the benchmarks with a grain of salt and maybe start looking at price vs. features.
