  • Western Digital Raptor X – Return of the 10,000 RPM King @ TweakTown

Published: Tuesday, March 28, 2006 | By: Dennis

In an attempt to make a bad Lord of the Rings reference TweakTown has released a new review.
"Hard drives are vacuum sealed from the factory to prevent the entry of foreign matter on the drive platters. When you open a drive you allow air, moisture and foreign matter into the drive, which results in bad sectors, data corruption and eventually, rendering the drive totally useless. The Raptor X has a factory built in window allowing you to view the drive platters and heads at work, which is a much safer option than doing the mod yourself."
King of not 10k RPM rox, the only thing better would be 15k RPM for which I would expect 16Meg buffers and full SATA2 support.

  • DFI RS482 Infinity Review @ Sudhian

Published: Tuesday, March 28, 2006 | By: Dennis

ATI has been making chipsets for a while now but they hold a very small segment of market share so its nice to see that a big name like DFI is up to the challenge of releasing an enthusiast ready MicroATX mobo into the world.
"Do-it-yourself mATX small form factor systems are gaining popularity among those that like the size of Shuttle XPC’s but want more expansion capabilities. Aspire’s X-Qpack and Silverstone’s SG01/SG01-E have become quite popular enclosure options. While there is plenty of mATX enclosures available, finding an enthusiast level mATX motherboard to accompany it becomes a harder task. Typically mATX motherboards have limited BIOS adjustments for overclocking and tweaking when compared to your typical enthusiast ATX motherboard. DFI’s new RS482 Infinity hopes to prove otherwise."
Bla blah blahh tongue smile Nice board tho.

  • HDA X-Plosion 7.1 DTS Connect Sound Card @ A True Review

Published: Tuesday, March 28, 2006 | By: Dennis

Its true, another review from A True Review.
"With DTS becoming nearly as common in home theatre receivers as Dolby Digital, it was only a matter of time before the DTS equivalent of Dolby Digital Live became available in a sound card. Well, that card is here. It is the HDA X-Plosion 7.1 DTS Connect – the world’s first Dolby Digital Live and DTS Connect certified sound card – and the subject of this review."
I still like this card, twill prolly be getting one myself in the coming months.

  • Second-tier mobo maker Abit to be delisted from TSE

Published: Thursday, March 23, 2006 | By: Dennis

First Abit annouces that they are back and better than ever and now this. Makes you wonder if their products are really that great.
"Abit will be delisted from the Taiwan Stock Exchange (TSE) as the latest financial statements it submitted to the TSE still failed to meet the requirements set by the government’s supervisory agency and also because it failed to completely redeem a due overseas convertible bond issue, the Chinese-language Commercial Times reported today, quoting a TSE report.

Abit is likely to be delisted within two months as the TSE is required to submit its proposal for delisting Abit to Taiwan’s Financial Supervisory Commission (FSC) for approval and post FSC’s official announcement for 40 days."

I mean com'on the [H] doesn't even review their stuff anymore, not to mention a total lack of Ninjalane support. (long old story)

  • Oversupply of 915 chipsets to affect profits at Taiwan mobo makers

Published: Thursday, March 23, 2006 | By: Dennis

Wouldn't an oversupply bring the chipset price down? its not like motherboards are traded like gold on the stock exchange.
"Taiwan makers of motherboards and PC chipsets are expected to have their profits eroded significantly in the first quarter due to an oversupply of Intel’s 915-series chipsets, according to Henry King, an analyst at Goldman Sachs, as quoted in a March 22 report of the Chinese-language Commercial Times.

According to the report, the oversupply of the 915 chipsets forced Asustek Computer to adopt an aggressive pricing for its S- and Oniga-series entry-level motherboards, with some models falling to as low as US$40, King noted. Other motherboard makers followed suit after Asustek cut its prices, the analyst noted."

Unless the oversupply is related to completed motherboards and not just chipsets.

  • Taiwan chipset makers blame harsh hardware requirements on Vista delay

Published: Thursday, March 23, 2006 | By: Dennis

"According to Taiwan chipset makers, the delay of the consumer release of Microsoft Vista to January 2007 is not surprising, considering the strict hardware requirements Microsoft is putting in place for its next generation operating system (OS).

Although Microsoft will still offer some enterprise versions of Vista in November, the consumer version will not be available this year, according to Microsoft press release. The software giant claims that it requires more time to enhance the security and other functions of the platform, the report noted."

I think that Taiwan chipset makers are just stabbing in the dark so they can get their name in the paper but there is some truth to their ramblings, at least on the hardware side of things.
Personally I think the delay is one way for Microsoft to get people taking about Vista and actually want to buy it.

  • Foxconn to begin shipping own-brand graphics cards

Published: Tuesday, March 14, 2006 | By: Dennis

"Taiwan EMS giant Foxconn Electronics (the registered trade name of Hon Hai Precision Industry) launched its first own-brand graphics card (PX7900GTX), which is based on the Nvidia GeForce 7900 GT/GTX (G71) graphics processing unit (GPU), at the ongoing CeBIT 2006 in Hannover, Germany.

Foxconn stated that it will also be partnering with ATI Technologies on graphics card production. The company will establish a brand new graphics card product line, and hopes to begin shipping own-brand graphics cards in the first half of this year.

Although industry players are concerned about the business outlook for Foxconn’s affiliate companies, Leadtek Research and Tul, both companies claimed ignorance about the news."

  • Future Plans of Foxconn From Cebit By Hexus

Published: Saturday, March 11, 2006 | By: Dennis

"In terms of new hardware products, FOXCONN will also be announcing a mainboard design which incorporates "four graphics card slots", which it will claim to be capable of operating in parallel; FOXCONN's buzz-term for this technology will be “immersive imagery.”"
Foxconn is really trying to break into the market; I hope they can do it.

and no, I don't hope for their success because they use Red PCBs on their motherboards.. Well not entirely. big grin smile
