After careful consideration I have decided to transfer all hardware review activities to a new domain.  I purchased Hardwareasylum.com in 2012 and have been working hard to build a new and improved Ninjalane on that domain.  If you are reading this you have reached one of the archived articles, news, projects and/or reviews that were left behind during the site migration.

Please update your bookmarks and be sure to visit the new and improved Ninjalane at Hardwareasylum.com

    Case Cooling

Many ATX case designs have started including support for 120mm fans giving the illusion of better cooling with a lower noise. While this is true in most cases keep in mind that for optimal cooling the air intake and exhaust should be of equal size with a slight restriction on the intake side. Unfortunately for the Temjin TJ04 the provided vent appears to be a little undersized for a 120mm fan. Because of this you can bet that most of the fresh air will be coming from inside the case.
Our Silverstone Temijn TJ04 came with two 120mm Silverstone case fans, it would seem that we got a little added bonus since the TJ04 is only supposed to come with one. These fans are white in color and use a standard Molex connector for power. A third RPM sensing wire can be used to monitor fan health with onboard sensors or media panel like the Silverstone FP52. As with most cases a perforated grill is provided to help filter EMF. As many case modders already know, these grills are rather restrictive and are normally the first to go.
Another issue with the stock grills is noise. Since airflow is restricted the fan has to work harder, and the harder it works the more noise it makes. The exhaust fan has it pretty easy since overflow air usually cycles back thru the fan into the case. The intake fan doesn't have that luxury and ends up spinning wildly due to reduced air resistance. Lucky a little Dremel action can remove this grill and if done correctly can still support the 3 fan sizes 80,92, and 120mm.
For those looking to add additional fans there is plenty of room for a 92mm top mounted blowhole or side mounted exhaust fans. We here at Ninjalane prefer to mount 2-3 80mm fans along the motherboard side of the case for increased ventilation. We have discovered that vents are far more efficient but a few low powered fans help to keep HDDs nice and cool.
